Microscope slide The object to be viewed ("specimen") on the microscope is typically placed on the middle of the slide with a smaller sheet of glass on top. The smaller sheet is called a "cover slip" or "cover glass". The cover glass serves protects the microscope's lens from contacting the specimen, and creates an even thickness for viewing.
